E-tourism: History and Challenges

The keynote speaker of RecTour 2016 is Prof. Hannes Werthner, one of the leading researchers and a distinct expert in the area of e-tourism.

Hannes Werthner is the head of the E-Commerce Group and dean of the Faculty of Informatics at TU Wien, Austria. Before that he was Professor for Information Systems at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, Professor for Information Systems at the Vienna University of Economics, Austria, and Professor for Computer Science and E-Commerce at the University of Trento, Italy. At TU Wien he was also co-founder and director of the Vienna PhD School of Informatics as well as the i2c (Informatics Innovation Center). He was member of the ISTAG strategic advisory board for the European research program IST in FP5, and is on the editorial board of several journals.

For his work in the field of e-tourism, the International Federation for IT and Tourism (IFITT) awards the yearly Hannes Werthner Tourism and Technology Lifetime Achievement Award to an individual from academia, industry or government who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the e-tourism field. Hannes Werthner was general co-chair of RecSys 2015 that took place at TU Wien last year.

Hannes Werthner holds a Master degree and a Ph.D. from TU Wien. He studied Computer Science at TU Wien, was visiting professor at several universities, and was a fellow from the Austrian Schrödinger Foundation. His research activities cover – besides recommender systems – a wide range of fields including e-commerce and e-tourism, internet-based information systems, service engineering, semantic web and web science. In the area of recommender systems, he is particularly interested in personality-based recommender systems such as the picture-based approach.
